Homepolish Happy

February 17, 2016

I'm psyched to officially be a part of Homepolish! Even though I am an independent contractor, I've just recently become part of the HP network of designers. #squadgoals acheived! I'm now lucky enough to have some new super talented colleagues to share the design experience with. And, if all goes according to plan, some new clients as well!

If you haven't heard of Homepolish, get your tushy over to their website stat. They're amazing. No, actually. They are phenomenal. They offer hourly interior design services from 700+ highly vetted designers In 15 cities. Their business model is genius. You can purchase design hours at $130/hr with a minimum of 10 hours, going up in increments of 5. This is extremely reasonable for the level of talent and services they're providing you with. They recently also rolled out a one-day in-home design package in which a designer comes to your home for three hours and whips up a little Homepolish Magic. Whether it's some speed shopping, bookshelf styling or some good intra-net sourcing, it's a great way for newbie clients to cut their teeth on the process and feel less intimidated (and broke!) by it all. Most come back wanting more, and then some.

What I really appreciate about Homepolish though is that they advocate not only for the client but also the designer. It's a total win/win. They recognize how much talent there is in the industry. And people - there is a lot. I am stunned, humbled and amazed daily by how many creative,  talented and capable peeps there are out there! There are heaps and heaps of largely undiscovered design talents, simply because the supply of talent overwhelms the client demand. Or, maybe the designer just doesn't have the right resources to tap into the "big time" projects and thus their max potential is never reached. Weep no more- there's room for everyone! Through a very thorough application and screening process, HP designers are on-boarded and magically matched up with clients. Boom! Brilliant.

Often I find as a designer and small business owner, it's easy to sell myself short because I want to continue to grow my business. But it often backfires on me.  I end up working many more hours than estimated and without proper compensation due to no one's fault but my own. Although it's all part of learning what works and what doesn't, it's inspiring just seeing how successful Homepolish's business model has been in such a short time.

Another designer benefit that will cause many designers reading this to gasp with envy: Homepolish will place and take care of all of the clients orders while passing along a 10% off retail discount to them. Whaaa? Yeah, you heard me correctly! Raise your hand if you're a designer and you spend literally 90 percent of your time doing administrative paperwork, pretending to understand accounting and dealing with messy return processes (the very un-glamorous but very real behind the scenes!) I'm raising both my hands and doing a little dance. Me, me! Well, Homepolish takes that off your plate. They completely extract those tedious administrative shackles so you can be a free, free bird, scheming and shopping to your heart's (and client's) content. This is the stuff design dreams are made of.

Ok, so, you get the point. Homepolish is awesome.  I'll stop all my mushy gushing, and leave you to mull over these drool-worthy images, courtesy of some of my new HP "colleagues". If these don't make you Homepolish Happy, I don't know what will!

What Do We Do Now?

January 25, 2016

I've been negligent in my blog writing lately and for that I do apologize!

I've been bouncing all around town installing a project, traveling to SF and back followed by a brief stint in Long Island. I returned back to Brooklyn right in the nick of time to batten down the hatches for Blizzard Jonas, which rendered us without heat, hot water or cooking gas for the majority of the storm.  (Still no cooking gas. Seamless for dinner!)

So, excuse me for saying TGIM! Thank Goodness It's Monday, and I'm back in my toasty office tapping on the keys of my trusty laptop. Is it odd that this is one of my happy places? Ms. Avery Etta is back at school after deciding she didn't like the snow one bit. "I don't like it!" and "It's too cold" were major indications. We tried to build a snowman which resulted in Avery face-planting in the snow and crying. We finally got her to calm down by going on the swings which were buried in the snowcapped playground. Mr. Bear (who LOVES the snow) is at daycare today. Yes, our dog goes to daycare. Don't judge. He's so happy to be reunited with his pup friends and get some exercise after a little hiatus.

And what better way to start off the week than by guesting on the podcast What Do We Do Now? A City Momcast. Hosted by Cody Linquist and Katie Schorr. (You might remember Katie from a very special Momtrepreneur Spotlight I wrote on her and her son Sly's nursery a few months ago.) These two funny ladies are super talented and I love tuning in to listen to their "Shitty City" and "I Love New York" moments which are so very relatable, along with adorable anecdotes about their toddler boys.

And can I just add that I LOVE podcasts? So it was a dream to be able to share some of my expertise on my favorite one! I was definitely a little nervous about hearing the sound of my own voice and what I would say, but Cody and Katie made it so easy. They feel like old friends! It was so much fun chatting all about maximizing small spaces for our tiny humans. To download the podcast, click here.

Below, (and above!) a round up of some of my other favorite podcasts. What are yours?

That's a Wrap!

December 23, 2015

I love wrapping gifts. Seriously. Good things come in well-wrapped packages, as they say. Anything you don't want to wrap, send my way via express Christmas elves, and I'll get them back to you by Christmas Eve.

My gift-wrapping obsession starting way back in high school while working one of my first jobs at the neighborhood toy store. They offered the service for free, and while my co-workers would pretend to be super busy stocking the already full shelves when there was a customer waiting at the gift-wrapping table, I eagerly bounded over, excited to meticulously wrap each purchase up into a tidy little package. I once wrapped a hula hoop. Not kidding.

To be honest - I was a little intimidated by the cash register (still am, just ask my accountant!) So what did I do? Hid behind the creative "making" part of my job, which came naturally to me. I guess I was decorating gifts? Not only did the art of wrapping come easily to me, it was also therapeutic and made the hours fly.

It also helped me to learn some real life lessons, such as how to patiently and graciously deal with rude customers who demanded that I fix corners that weren't perfect or to hurry up because they were going to be late to Billy's bowling party. Once someone even told me I was using too much tape. (Seriously dude? You're getting this beautiful gift wrap for free. And I'm not talking like the cheap stuff that rips when you look at it. I'm talking the good stuff - that nice, thick, quality wrapping paper. There were also about 10 different adorable pattern options, complete with curling ribbon and logo stickers).

Anyways, I digress - but I think I learned a lot at that gift-wrapping station. Perhaps it was even a metaphor for what I do today. Wrap people's homes up in nice, neat tidy little packages and deliver them the best and most efficient way that I can. There's something so satisfying in taking a normal old box (aka almost every NYC apt) and turning it into a personalized, beautiful gift with a bow on top. It's therapeutic to anticipate the happiness that it will (hopefully!) deliver.

And gifts, like homes and clients, come in all different shapes and sizes. No two recipients are the same. Each one will choose a different wrapping paper. Each equally beautiful. Some might even tell me to fix the corners. It's all part of the job!

So, here's a roundup of some beautiful #inspo to get you excited as I am to wrap this holiday season up.
