A Pup with a Purpose

February 24, 2015

Although we are currently 1,794 miles away from our beloved rescue mutt Bear, we didn't forget that yesterday was his adopt-a-versary. I can't believe it has already been two years since this little guy wiggled his way into our hearts. It feels like he has been a part of our family since day one, and we can't imagine life without him.

I call Bear my little therapy dog, and I truly believe he is an angel that was sent to us. We were going through a tough time a little over two years ago. There was a sequence of stressful events that had happened within a few months, and we definitely felt a little down. We decided it was time to bring some joy on to the Saccullo scene. Having both grown up with small breed fluffy pups, it was our dream to adopt one of our own. When Eric saw this face on Petfinder, he just couldn't resist. I mean, look at this guy. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to smile back at that face!

We have no idea why, but heartbreakingly, Bear was in a high-kill shelter just outside of Houston, TX. He was rescued by his amazing foster mom Sharon who runs Save our Strays Fort Bend. (More on their amazing mission here.) About a week later, Bear Houston Saccullo (the artist formally know as Giles) arrived via a rescue truck called Rescue Road Trips. You can follow their uplifting journeys on Facebook here.

What a traveling man Mr. Bear proved to be! After days of driving, this wiggly pup was lovingly lifted out of his crate and placed directly into our arms at a parking lot in Spring Vally, NY. He immediately showered us with kisses and then went off to frolic in the snow, which he had clearly never seen before.

It took about a week or so, but with the help of our rockstar dog-walker and some early mornings and late nights, Bear made himself right at home at le petit apt. It's a good thing, because no matter what, we had vowed that this little man was not going back! For better or for worse, we took a leap of faith. It paid off, and then some.

Since that fateful cold day in February 2013, our fur-baby, our first baby, has lifted our spirits on a daily basis. Since his contagious positive energy was so therapeutic for us, we decided that we needed to share the wealth. We had him trained and certified as a therapy dog with the talented and hilarious Claire Cario of the Good Dog Foundation . Bear visits old age homes in our neighborhood where he loves to curl up on alzheimer and dementia patients' laps. Even if it brightens their day for just a moment, it's worth the trip.

I truly believe Bear rescued us just as much as we rescued him. He's a best friend, a companion, a listener, a blood-pressure reducer, a kind and gentle big brother. He's a huge part of what makes our house a home. And let's be honest, an interior is just better when there's a pup in it. Okay, so you may have to steam-clean your rugs and upholstery about 12 more times a year, but it's well worth it!

How does your dog elevate your heart and your home?

Into the Great Wide Open...

February 22, 2015

Boulder, we have arrived! It was quite a journey, but about twelve hours, eight diaper changes, three outfit changes and two trips to the store later, we've started to settle in. I'm feeling a bit giddy about this work & play-cation. I have to admit this harsh winter has given me a serious case of cabin fever, and I feel like I've been bouncing off the walls at le petit apt.

Although we haven't escaped the snow, I'm eagerly welcoming the change of scenery. It's always invigorating to take a step outside of the Brooklyn bubble, and I'm hoping the fresh air and beautiful backdrop of the Flatiron mountains will breathe some new life into me.  It's amazing how much there is to see in just one little corner of Colorado, let alone the entire world. It is truly humbling and reminds me that I am just a small moving piece of a much larger puzzle. There is so much out there to see and explore, sometimes I'm not even sure where to start!

When visiting a new city, submerging into the art, design and culture of the area always helps me to gain perspective and find new inspiration. Avery and I are eager to dive into the local life starting tomorrow while Eric works, so we welcome any sightseeing, shopping and restaurant recs you might have!

So far, I like what Boulder is all about. I can't wait to begin to explore (even if it requires snowshoes!) and find some treasures along the way, so stay tuned!

Momtrepreneur Spotlight: Leah Fox of Charm & Magic

February 20, 2015

Spending more time in Brooklyn these past few months has opened my eyes to a whole new world of creative spirits, and I'm inspired by it daily. I'm so thankful to be living at the epicenter of a buzzing, vibrant culture brimming with artists, writers, forward-thinkers, and makers.

Speaking of makers, I'm particularly inspired by my friend and fellow momtrepreneur Leah Fox. A teacher of yoga and a maker of these wonderfully whimsical mini-mala neckalces, Leah and I met through a Brooklyn moms group and became fast friends.

Crystal Clear: Mini-Mala

For those of you who don't know what a mini-mala is (I didn't before I met Leah!), it is a version of a traditional japa mala prayer necklace used in yogic and Buddhist traditions. These necklaces are configured of 108 beads and are used to help keep count during chanting mantras or prayers. Leah explains this more gracefully than I can on her Charm & Magic website, so for more info, click here.

Leah's mini-mala creations are a delicate, fun and sparkly take on these traditional prayer beads. I love how they balance a lighthearted and airy aesthetic mixed with the powerful spirituality behind them. They exist for your connection and protection, or just a pause to reflect in the midst of your daily chaos. In Leah's words, they are a "reminder to see Charm & Magic, always."

Magic in itself, she started her business just two weeks before Luca was born. She felt a longing to help people connect to themselves, and in the process of creating her mini-malas, she connects to herself both creatively and philanthropically. A portion of the proceeds from each creation go towards the Human Plant Project , a program which strives to help underserved communities in the NYC area through the practice of yoga and mindfulness. Sounds like good karma for everyone!

In the rat-race of New York City and the industry of interior design, I find it so easy to fall down the rabbit hole of material things by default, always wanting and needing. As the ultimate consumer, it's never enough. There's always more- the latest product on the market, the "why didn't I think of that". Hungry for knowledge and inspiration, I am constantly devouring books, magazines, blogs, and social media, and I feel like it's only the tip of the iceberg. While this isn't a bad thing, it often leaves me with my head spinning and removes me from the present moment of just being. A quick glance at my mini-mala bracelets remind me to take a breath, pause and come back to the present - a little mini-meditation if you will.

Wearing these mini-mala bracelets that Leah made for me (complete with adorable hand-made packaging, which doesn't hurt!) reminds me to fulfill her wish behind the creations:  "May these malas ground and guide you as your craft conscious days creating a blissful life". Instead of wondering what to make for dinner, what I'm doing tomorrow, or what's happening in the Twitterverse, I'll take note of the sound of children's laughter in the distance, the tiny leaf (or piece of litter, hah!) blowing in the wind, Bear's pure joy in frolicking in the snow-covered park, and the look of wonder on Avery's face as she stares wide-eyed from her stroller, absorbing the city around her. We should all try to see the world through our children's eyes (or mouths!) more often.

Luca and Avery exploring!

A sunny, sub-zero walk at the park.

As moms, Leah and I have learned so much from our little ones on how to experience the simplicity of happiness. Both having fledgling businesses, we've also learned from each other how to (attempt to) balance the world of motherhood and entrepreneurship... definitely not an easy feat, and one that is an constant work in progress.  As a person whose wheels are endlessly turning, it has been admittedly difficult to train myself to take some time out, but every time I do, it's well worth the effort. I'd like to make it a habitual practice to apply this mantra to my everyday design work and remember the true meaning of home. A place to live, love, create, and just be.

So, bring on the charm! Here are some beautiful inspiration images (many from Leah's Pinterest boards , personal home, and Instagram feed!) to remind you to live your life at home with intention. Let's all namaste, the Charm & Magic way.
